What’s a moment with Community First Development that’s stayed with you?
A moment that’s stayed with me and continues to guide how I work every day is simply sitting with community. Whether it’s in a room, under a tree, or wherever people feel most comfortable, being invited to listen without an agenda is powerful. Hearing stories, sharing space, and watching people shape their own vision for the future through our community development framework reminds me that this work is about more than projects. It’s about trust, connection, and relationships that go beyond timelines relationships that last a lifetime.
What real change have you seen through our work together?
One of the most powerful changes I’ve seen is the shift in relationships from transactional to transformational. When we take the time to listen deeply, walk alongside communities, and honour their leadership, we see trust grow. That trust becomes the foundation for long-term partnerships where communities feel confident to lead, and where outcomes are shaped by their aspirations, not ours. It’s not just about delivering a project, it’s about supporting self-determination and seeing communities strengthen their own systems, voices, and futures. That’s real change.
For communities and staff: what are your hopes for future generations?
My hope is that future generations grow up in a world where self-determination isn’t something they have to fight for it’s simply respected. I hope they inherit strong, connected communities where culture is celebrated, leadership is shared, and systems are shaped by those they’re meant to serve. I want them to feel proud of who they are, confident in their voices, and supported by structures that reflect their values. Most of all, I hope they continue to walk forward with strength, guided by the wisdom of those who came before them.
“Here’s to 25 years of walking alongside communities, championing self-determination, and creating lasting change through genuine partnerships. From remote homelands to urban centres, across generations and borders, we’ve stood together First Peoples and non-Indigenous peoples building trust, sharing knowledge, and shaping futures grounded in culture, strength, and respect. To every community, volunteer, partner, and team member who’s been part of this journey thank you. Your commitment, courage, and care have made this milestone possible. Here’s to the next 25 years of community-led, culturally grounded, and transformative work.”
