“By invitation” might sound simple, but it’s profoundly significant. Too often, programs are rolled out in First Nations communities without being requested or co-designed by the people who live there. And then we wonder why they don’t work.

Community First Development works only by invitation—and that’s what I find most moving and powerful about our work. First Nations people lead, design, and drive the change they want to see. It’s self-determination in action: solutions that are fit-for-purpose, grounded in culture, and shaped by community priorities.

There are more powerful success stories than I can count—community-led enterprises making a real difference now, with bold visions for future generations.

Congratulations to everyone involved—from past and present Board members and leaders who continue to advocate for this approach to be funded, to our skilled community development practitioners and volunteers, and to the wider staff team whose contributions often go unseen but are deeply valued, and to our incredible supporters and funders that keep this work going.

And to our community partners: thank you for your trust, your friendship, and the honour of walking alongside you when you invite us in. I’m inspired every day by your strength, creativity, and commitment. Stay strong.

When it comes to the next 25 years, I hold deep hope for what’s possible when communities lead and systems listen. The strength, wisdom, and innovation of First Nations peoples continue to shape a better future—not just for their communities, but for all of us. If we keep walking together, grounded in respect and invitation, we can build a more just, inclusive, and vibrant world. One where every solution is shaped by those it’s meant to serve, and where self-determination is not a principle, but a lived reality.
